Is dialectic something acquired or lost?

A thought occurred to me today: Is the ability to think dialectically something we gain or lose? I guess this would be a question for cultural anthropologists and/or developmental psychologists, but I was wondering if it were possible that negative or contradictory thinking might be more easily engaged in or accepted by children who haven't yet been taught the iron-clad "laws of thought" about avoiding contradiction, or so-called "primitive" peoples whose cultures do not promote this kind of either/or thinking.
